Classes Offered

AKC S.TA.R. Puppy Class

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Class focuses on everything a puppy and owner need in order to have a great start together.


S.T.A.R. stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsible Owner. 


Class topics include: 

  • Week 1: Sit, come, potty training issues
  • Week 2: Down, touch/kiss, biting, settle
  • Week 3: Off, watch, leash, jumping 
  • Week 4: Stand, basic First Aid, grooming
  • Week 5: Leash, fetch, "excuse me," releasing objects, tug-of-war
  • Week 6: Puppy games and graduation

Therapy Dog Certification

The Therapy Dog Certification classes train dogs and handlers to be a successful therapy dog team. The class covers all of the topics and skills necessary in order to pass the Door County Therapy Dog Team, Inc. evaluation.  (Note: Dogs must have basic obedience training, such as AKC Canine Good Citizen certification, prior to taking the Therapy Dog Certification class).


Upon class completion, teams will be certified with Door County Therapy Dog Teams, Inc.


Class topics include:

  • Weeks 1-3: Preparation and practice for the handler/dog team evaluation.
  • Week 4: Practice in the field, gauging dog preferences
  • Week 5: Testing in the field; final evaluation

Class Requirements

 What to bring to class:

  • Six-foot leash
  • Buckle collar (or non-corrective harness)
  • Clean up kit for your dog (paper towel and/or wet wipes, bag for disposal, lint roller, and hand sanitizer)
  • Class fee 
  • Vet-completed health verification form
  • Handler/Dog sign-in form


AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy classes also need:

  • Dog treats
  • Dog rug or blanket


Complete and return class forms by the first night of class.
